How We Assist You in Planning an Orthodox Funeral in Sydney

Arranging a funeral can be emotional and challenging, especially when honouring specific religious traditions.

  • Orthodox Location Support: Helping families choose a suitable Orthodox church or chapel for the service.
  • Priest Coordination: Working closely with Orthodox clergy to honour all traditional rites.
  • Cultural & Spiritual Customs: We work with your priest to help ensure the sacred Trisagion (three-holy prayers) are completed to honour the Holy Trinity, and we can assist your family in preparing the Koliva, a symbol of resurrection and everlasting life.
  • Funeral Coordination Services: Managing transportation, scheduling, and other logistical details to ease your burden during this time.

Types of Orthodox Funeral Services We Offer

While we support families from many Orthodox traditions, we have particular experience in the specific traditions and customs of the Greek Orthodox Church, working closely with parishes across Sydney.

1. Traditional Church Funeral Service

This is the most common form of Greek Orthodox funeral, held in a Greek Orthodox church and officiated by a priest. This includes:

  • Trisagion prayers before and after the funeral
  • The main funeral liturgy (with scripture readings, psalms, hymns like the "Kontakion")
  • Viewing of the body in the church
  • Final Kiss of Peace
  • Procession to the cemetery

2. Trisagion Service (Short Prayer Service)

A brief memorial prayer typically performed:

  • Immediately after death
  • The evening before the funeral (at home or funeral home)
  • At the graveside after burial
  • On memorial days (3rd, 9th, and 40th day, 6-month, 1-year, etc.)

3. Greek Orthodox Memorial Service

A special service held to honor the memory of the deceased, traditionally observed:

  • We can help you arrange the 40-day memorial, the most significant service, as it marks the soul's journey and mirrors Christ's ascension into heaven.
  • 3, 6, 9, or 12 months after death
  • Annually

Families may offer koliva (boiled wheat with sugar and pomegranate) as part of the ritual.

4. Culturally Inclusive Ceremonies

For families with younger generations or a mix of beliefs, we can run services in both Greek and English. It’s a great way to make sure everyone feels included and connected, without losing the cultural meaning that matters most.
